The frenzy

There is no feeling like it! No way to describe it! Many people will go a lifetime without knowing what its like. (I feel sorry for those people)

So far I have had the privilege of experiencing it twice in my life, 30 minutes of chaos, excitement, adrenaline and pure anarchy. There is no warning, no sign, nothing and no-one can prepare you for what is about to happen.

It starts off like any other day, you and your family or friends a few rods and some dropshot gear out for a day on the river. It’s a normal day a small Garrick or two nothing special. The sun’s on its way down and your about to call it a day when someone says I just had a chase, you don’t take much notice. However before lifting your minnow out the water you see a flash of silver but write it off to being your imagination.

On your next retrieve you follow your braid as it makes its way through the water when all of a sudden you start seeing deep gushes in the water behind your minnow and the adrenaline starts pumping as you realise the possibility of a decent Garrick behind your lure. Again when the minnow reaches you, you see the flash of silver and realise your earlier sighting was not a mistake.

Your next cast you give everything you have to maximize distance covered in the water and on the third turn of your reel, there is an explosion in the water and before the vibrations have reached the tip of your rod, goosebumps have covered your body and you are in for the fight of a lifetime. The rod to your left is getting chases, the popper on your right is being smashed out the water.

The Garrick are in a frenzy, nothing in the water is safe every cast is met with 2 or 3 Garrick fighting to reach your lure first. Adrenaline is running through you, you never want this to end Garrick are everywhere and they just seem to be getting bigger. Every cast is met with a Garrick every second is pure ecstasy and all out fishing. Just when the sun has disappeared behind the horizon, as quickly as it has started again they are gone. The water has returned to being a glass top the only sound you can hear is your own heavy breathing having just had the most energy sapping and adrenaline pumping 30 minutes of your life. You and your friends simply stare at the water in complete silence and in pure shock over what has just transpired.

I will never be able to truly tell you what it is like, I can only hope that you will also one day experience this for yourself and wish that I am there to share the moment with you.
