The final couple of days of our Angola fishing adventure had dawned upon us. In contrast to the tangible anticipation for the trip to begin, where days felt like weeks, it had flown past in the blink of an eye.

A bit of lure fishing in the Klein Brak River
Some light tackle fishing in the Southern Cape area (Klein Brak River).
This past weekend we had the wonderful privilege of heading down to the Southern Cape Coast for some light tackle dropshot, popping and scratching.

Angola – The rush of the unknown – (part 4)
Catching bronze whalers in Angola became old news very quickly. The Namibian crew thought I was going crazy when I brought this up. I was sure that there are a couple of Capetonians back home that would support their theory and would love to catch bronzie after bronzie.

Dropshot Namibia
This is a topic I am asked about quite often. Lure fishing and more importantly, success at it, takes fishing to a whole new level. I have managed to gain some experience and picked up some tips along the way and we have not looked back since.
Ending off 2013 at Cannon Rocks and Boknes
The Christmas / New Year’s holiday was upon us. Although only a short, one week break, it was dearly needed. The idea of heading down to the Eastern Cape for a few days had me excited for weeks in advance. Cannon Rocks was calling and at 11.30am we hit the road from Somerset West.

Our lure angling tackle
The tackle we use for our artificial lure angling in the estuaries and rock and surf spinning.
So we got stuck into this whole artificial lure angling thing quite a while ago. I was glued to the TV each time the ESA team had a “dropshot” fishing session. I loved the idea of the challenge, outsmarting a fish to have a go at your lure; and of course, the ESA guys were catching loads of kingies and wave-garrick in KZN, seemed so easy, but little did we know that it is a bit more difficult the further South you went. Regardless, I was convinced that we were going to catch dozens of fish down in the Eastern and Southern Cape…

Angola – The rush of the unknown (part 3)
The third day’s fishing Angola had very little to write home about, unless you were a shark fisherman. The bronzies were very much on the bite and the guys were landing them one after the other. I am not sure if the abundance of bronzies causes the edible fish to disperse, but I could not as much as get a bump on the lures. I decided to get in on the bronzie action, hold on tight!

Hopeful – Witsand Early October 2013
Breede River early October can mean only one thing, the search for that ambush hunter, the one with the dead-give-away-head-shakes.
Angola – The rush of the unknown (part 2)
I awoke very early the next morning. Nature called and I had to step outside to water a bush. It was dead quiet, only the sounds of a couple of men sawing wood (snoring) and the ocean distantly grumbling each time a wave crashed interrupted the silence. On my way around the tent I noticed a couple of eyes staring back at me. My heart skipped a beat, I contemplated shouting, but quickly realised that it was only a couple of scavenging jackals eating the scraps around the tents. As soon as they caught sight of me they darted a few hundred meters away, lay down, and patiently waiting for their next opportunity to venture into our camp.
